Improving access to drinking water through the rehabilitation and modernisation of manual water pumps in Senegal

Innovate - Drinking water

Project summary

The Falémé project initiated by SCP and Oshun is part of Oshun’s scaling strategy in the Kédougou region of Eastern Senegal. It focuses on setting up a public-private partnership to rehabilitate and modernise 17 manual water pumps into solar-powered pumps. They will also include a storage tank and Oshun’s water treatment systems to produce safe water inside water kiosks. SCP and Oshun will provide support to SOGES, a private operator, who will integrate the rehabilitated sites in their operations and manage the sale of water, both raw and treated, through the kiosks.

With support from Aqua for All, Oshun is able to position itself as a key player in point-of-use water treatment in rural areas. They propose a solution that is energy independent and requires low operating and maintenance costs while working closely with the authorities. It is expected that this partnership will serve around 34.000 people in a region where access to water is very limited.
