Project summary
Sponge Town in Nakuru, Kenya, buffers two extremes: it captures excess water from storms and re-uses it during drought periods in urban areas. This cushioning is based on the 3R approach (retention, recharge, reuse), green infrastructure and a direct link between integrated water resource management (IWRM) and water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH).
The sponge principle ensures protection from floods, as water can be directed and stored in designated places, as well as alternative water sources for times of scarcity. Its benefits both citizens and businesses by reliable water supply, safe sanitation, and job creation (urban farming, service provision).
