Safisana: Scaling up sustainably in waste management and re-use

Scale - Sanitation

Project summary

Safisana is a social enterprise developing a circular model for waste treatment. On their recycling plant in Ashaiman, Ghana, they turn organic waste and faecal sludge into high-value products: renewable energy sources, organic fertiliser and irrigation water. With Aqua for All’s support through a blended-finance mechanism, Safisana will link up with existing wastewater treatment plants. They plan to combine their expertise while utilising and improving these often malfunctioning facilities for a competitive service fee. By 2025, they expect to have three operational plants and win recognition by urban planners as a sustainable and reliable approach for non-sewered sanitation management.
