Innovate - Sanitation

Project summary

This project, led by Gret, aims to strengthen a small private sanitation company named CTD de Kabrousse, which has been operating a combined solid waste/sludge collection and treatment plant in Diembering, southern Senegal since 2006.

CTD is a women-led enterprise with significant potential to improve its business, both technically and operationally. Therefore, capacity building will be provided to strengthen the enterprise in financial management, HR management and marketing and communication aspects. In addition, technical support will focus on upgrading the old infrastructures to increase treatment capacity and in collaboration with the start-up Filtre Plante, they will construct ‘planted drying beds’, creating a low-tech nature-based solution for wastewater and sludge treatment. Finally, a local PPP model will be established to ensure institutional sustainability.

The overall objective of the project is to improve living conditions and the environment in the municipality of Diembering (25,000 inhabitants) by improving the operations of the existing private sanitation operator. Moreover, CTD represents an interesting business model for waste and sludge management services for secondary towns in Senegal, hence the project will monitor and explore the potential for scaling up to other small secondary Senegalese towns.
