What topics are you working on and/or do you have experience with?

Kees van Leeuwen is Principal Scientist at KWR Watercycle Research Institute and holds a Chair at the Copernicus Institute (University of Utrecht) on water management and urban development. He coordinates the City Blueprint Action Group of EIP Water. He is also emeritus professor in risk assessment of chemicals and former director of the Institute of Health and Consumer Protection at the European Commission (JRC Italy). Between 1980 and 2001 he worked at three different Dutch Ministries on water, health and the environment. His fields of expertise are ecology, toxicology, risk assessment, chemicals, pesticides, animal alternatives (intelligent testing strategies) and urban water management.

What are you looking for in the VIA Water Community (partners, skills, advice, knowledge, etc)?

Urban water issues; connections with African cities that want to participate in baseline assessments and governance in the areas of water, waste and climate change

What knowledge, expertise, skills do you have to offer?

Water pollution, risk assessment of chemicals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, water management, climate adaptation, urban planning, training and capacity building. Cornelis Johannes (Kees) van Leeuwen, PhD is principal scientist at the KWR Watercycle Research Institute and Professor in Water Management and Urban Development at the University of Utrecht (UU) in the Netherlands. He studied biology and published more than 200 reports and publications and 2 editions of a book on Risk Assessment of Chemicals, a book on PBTs and the Urban Water Atlas for Europe. He worked at the European Commission as Director at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Italy. From 1992-2007 he held a part-time professorship in Biological Toxicology (environmental risk assessment) at the UU. Between 1980 and 2001 he worked in three Dutch Ministries on water, chemicals, health and the environment. He has been member of various policy and expert groups in the International Rhine Committee, European Commission, OECD, UN, and the European chemical industry.
