Pilot No. 2 - East African Dominican Friars

The existing system: Clogged, smells bad and encourages mosquitos larvae

Our team at Agua Kenya has broken ground on our second pilot site at the East Africa Dominican Friars (EADF) based in Karen. This community has experienced serious problems for years with an existing constructed wetland. They have had challenges with the National Environmental Management Authority due to its poor performance and the major issues outlined below. They are excited to implement our system as an example for surrounding communities facing similar challenges.
The project is located in Karen area, south west of nairobi which consists of numerous international schools, universities, large commercial centres, religious congregation headquarters and several charity associations, none of which are connected to a central sewer system. Wastewater in this area is either soaked into the ground or dumped into Mokoyeti river which is used by peri urban dwellers in kuwinda and later drains into the national park. Ngong Hills is a major catchment area and as such, many streams flow down from the Hills through Karen and further downstream into the National Park. The streams are mostly heavily contaminated by the time they reach the park and are a major cause for environmental damage and health and sanitation issues

Great work Mshila! Good potential here to connect clean water to many different communities. When will you start piloting here  at the East Africa Dominican Friars (EADF)?

Hi Vi,

We have already started. We should have the installation complete by end of this week. They are circulating a newsletter to other dioceses on our project which is fantastic PR for us.
