Drinking water supply in Tamale, Ghana

This piece of literature is an attempt to present the current picture of water supply and demand in Tamale. Tamale is the regional capital of the northern region of Ghana. it is the third largest city by population 350, 000 residents, second largest by land size and third most developed in Ghana. The supply of drinking water to residents by the Ghana water company limited GWCL is inadequate, erratic, unreliable and relatively expensive. The distribution lines or pipes do not cover the entire city. Thus, many communities/suburbs are not fed with water from the GWCL. In some communities/suburbs where distribution pipelines exist, water flows (short flow) once in 2-3 weeks. This situation often causes shortage and scarcity of drinking water amongst residents, schools, hospitals and other institutions. Underground water sources such as boreholes and wells are explored to supply untreated hard water. These sources however, often run out as they are dependent on ground water recharge. The immediate solution Agrointroductions Ghana is working on is to make use of the many everlasting dams within the metropolitan city to supply clean treated water for healthier, happier and satified residents. We are hopeful that VIA Water would transform our idea into a reality.
