In January 2018, ten households in Maputo started with a pilot with BSF (Black Soldier Flies) and Straight Flush toilets (pia fantastica) for the toilets for their households. The toilets use just one cup of water to flush and the BSF are innoculated in the toilet pits to eat the excreta. In each household someone was trained on how to cultivate BSFs (see posting https://rsr.akvo.org/en/project/4127/update/23177/ ) Regularly new BSF are added to the pit to make sure there is enough emptying of the pit.
In March 2019, the project team visited a community member who explains how her toilet functions and how she has been able to maintain a pit which does not fill up.
