In this study, we investigated the potential of a MW based technology for slum or emergency sanitation applications by treating fresh fecal sludge (FS) obtained from the Sanergy's Fresh Life® toilets located in the slums of Mukuru and Mathare in Nairobi, Kenya. Given the slum conditions and the mode of operation of the sanitation system, we assummed that the fresh FS sample is relatively similar to that which is generated in emergency camps. Three aspects of the proposed MW treatment technology were assessed including the reduction of pathogens, sludge volume, and organic matter.
