Call for proposals:
'In Sub-Sahara Africa the most commonly used sanitation solution in refugee camps is the basic pit latrine, which is cheap to construct, but quickly fills up, requiring replacement after an average of 2 years. Basic pit latrines are not suitable, however, where the site has challenging ground conditions (high groundwater table, flood prone, hard rocky ground, highly congested etc). The need for suitable sanitation solutions, taking into account social, economic and environmental considerations, is now becoming increasingly important. (...) UNHCR has received funding from the Gates Foundation to introduce and conduct operational research on sanitation solutions for areas with challenging ground conditions in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya (...)'
