current latrines in Kasarani are prone to overflowing and spreading disease
In the past, most landlords used to dig new pits rather than emptying, but they’re running out of space. Exhauster trucks and “gulpers” can be used to empty latrines, but they are time intensive, costly, and not all latrines are easily accessible. Diapers, which are currently discarded in the latrines, can also clog the exhauster trucks. Some landlords provide incinerators for menstrual pads, but diapers are normally too wet to burn. Few areas have garbage services, so residents don't know what else they can do.
Many landlords are unable to dig deep pits because of rocky soil. Overflowing pit latrines, especially during the rainy season, are a common site, and contribute to the spread of disease in the community. Last year, an outbreak of cholera caused over 10 deaths in the community.
