Kajiado Mosque leaders & Rain Foundation/Aidenvironment pose for a picture

The sponge city project team proposed interventions aimed at increasing recharge of urban underground water, reducing nitrates infiltrating into the aquifer and improving quality of urban environment. Site No. 4 of Kajiado Sponge City sites is the Mosque compound where a large surface of the mosques roof collects rainwater which is not stored but joins with the storm water. The large compound is generally bare. Most of the runoff flows and socks into pit latrines for pupils in the Mosque’s run primary school and ultimately gets into the aquifer polluted water.
The mosque authorities and the Sponge City team held a meeting and shared the strategies to change the above situation. “Give us the plans, we have the money to implement” was the decision of the mosque authorities.
