Viable 24/7 rural water in Uganda

Project summary

Whave

Whave is a Ugandan social-enterprise founded in 2011 to solve this problem of non-functional rural water resources in Uganda.

The project focuses on strenghtening the service delivery arm of Whave as a 24/7 O&M Service Delivery business. They do this through appointed technicians. They currently service 250,000 people via over 1000 handpumps.

This project supports WHAVE in making key adjustments to the strategy and organisational structure to achieve their 10-year vision: providing financially self-sustaining (covering OPEX and CapManEx) delivery for 2 million people within 4 regions in Uganda . WHAVE has identified key needs around improving the cost-recovery ratio of their communities and strengthening their operational capacity. This project focuses on two of their four existing regions and one new region in Midwestern Uganda.

For improving the cost-recovery, they aim to focus on two key areas:

1. Reducing Operational cost
2. Increase revenues

The scaling, saturation and increased willingness to pay also requires enhancing WHAVE’s governance structure and capacity. WHAVE seeks to launch a dedicated service entity with specific branding as an “off-grid utility” to distinguish the philanthropically funded work and advocacy to the service delivery arm.
