Simavi and Aqua for All jointly worked on sustainable Water & Sanitation Services for Schools and Communities in a three year program called ‘WASH and Learn!’ in three countries in Eastern Africa (2016-2018). Aqua for All co-financed the program and we focused on ensuring long term functionality of the facilities. Girls and boys, teachers and parents jointly learned how to handle issues like Menstrual Hygiene Management, breaking the silence regarding this taboo and make insights very practical by learning how to make menstrual pads.
School Health Clubs have proven to be a great vehicle to organize the school community to undertake income generating activities, like gardening for paying the water bill & maintenance of facilities. To share lessons learned, recently two ‘Learning Briefs’ were published regarding the experience with Sustainability Tools and with School Health Clubs and Menstrual Hygiene Management. You can download them here:
Two more publications will follow, one on ‘Community Clustering’, and the other one on ‘Water as a Business’. We’ll keep you posted!
