Dunea and Aqua for All attended the official kick-off meeting of a new WASH rehabilitation project in Homa Bay, Kenya on the 23th of July. The initial goal is to establish a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) that has the objective to set up a decentralized Water Service Delivery (WSD) model in Homa Bay County, Kenya for domestic water supply and WASH in schools.

In case this pilot is successful, Aqua for All intends to build a market-based financing mechanism as a so called outcome payment mechanism for Safe Water Enterprises (SWEs) that helps unlock investments for scaling access to safe water, suppressing the demand of boiling of the water.

The project includes both the upgrade of school sanitation and the construction of new water supply facilities for selected villages. During a follow up meeting on the 26th of July a proposal for new boreholes to supply water for approx. 7,000 – 9,000 people a meeting was discussed.

A Memorandum of Understanding is currently under development for this Water PPP. Two infrastructure components are identified: the WASH component comprising 4-6 minigrid decentralized water systems and the Football for Water component comprising the upgrade of school water supply and sanitation systems for 4-5 schools. Time schedule: September 2018 – September 2022.
