Festive Football for Water project launch in Homa Bay!
Since March 2018 the Dutch water utility company Dunea NV and Dutch organization Aqua for All started scoping opportunities to extend Dutch expertise in WASH management to Homa Bay County, Kenya. These scoping activities led to a series of projects with the objective to fast-track sustainable access to safely managed water and sanitation facilities in both rural and urban settings in Homa Bay County. Dunea and Football for Water will fund sustainable football and WASH facilities and hygiene behavior change in five public primary schools. Football for Water combines WASH interventions in schools with behavior change activities.
Thursday 11 April 2019, Dutch Football legend and WorldCoaches Ambassador Johan Neeskens and Wim Drossaert, CEO of Dunea, kicked off the festive Football for Water project launch at the Adongo Primary School, one of the five primary schools that will be provided with WASH facilities and life skills in Homa Bay County, Kenya.
The launch in Homa Bay brings together five primary schools, community members, and (local) project implementing partners including the Homa Bay County Government, HOMAWASCO, AMREF Kenya, Kisumu Youth Football Association and the partners from the Netherlands namely the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunea, VOx Impuls, Aqua for All, The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB), and many others partners and stakeholders. This week Johan Neeskens and WorldCoaches Instructor Piet de Jong started training the WorldCoaches of the five schools. These trainings are provided to support sustainable hygiene behavior change, a crucial objective of the program.
Dunea will fund the sanitation facilities, capacity building and sensitization activities in these schools. Different elements of the Football of Water program will be showcased by the children while the water kiosk, sanitation facilities and football field will be inaugurated. The event will be closed by the girls and boys school football finals.
Wim Drossaert, CEO Dunea:
“Dunea is happy and proud to participate in this Football for Water project. It’s great to see what the power of football can do. The past days we have witnessed the impact of safe and clean drinking water and sanitation on the community of Homa Bay. These facilities, combined with the important life skills that are educated through the WASH program, are the basis of good health and sustainable economic development.”
