How to finance sanitation services?

The Sarphati Sanitation Award winners (Sasha Kramer, SOIL and Abhijit Banerji, FINISH Society) and nominee (Catherine Kisamwa, Sidian Bank) held a keynote speech during the Sarphati Sanitation Solutions Seminar on Tuesday 31st of October, organized by World Waternet and moderated by Lidi Remmelzwaal, Chair of the Sarphati Jury.

Experiences from Haiti, India and Kenya inspired the panel discussion on Financing models for Sanitation (Louis Strydom/FMO, Frans Weekers/European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Nicholaus Angumbwike/Utility Manager Tanzania and Graham Alabaster/UN-HABITAT).

They all agreed on the fact that where as the construction of toilets can be a profitable business, governments are still needed to remove barriers for the selling or reuse of products made from toilet waste.

Catherine Kisamwa from Sidian Bank Kenya explained how loans for sanitation help her bank to ensure payment of other loans. Healthy people will pay back their loans so they don’t loose money, as sanitation services improve people’s lives. She promised Sidian Bank is going to be an ambassador for sanitation.
